I think there is a distinction that needs to be made between the two usages of privilege in this thread.
For the first type, privilege can be used to describe something that is endowed to a person as something necessary to allow them to thrive but can also be nullified should that person abuse it. For example, I am given a privilege as a human being to go out on the streets and roam where I please. Should I abuse this privilege, however, and go out and murder someone, my privilege is revoked and I am forced to reside in jail.
On the other hand, privilege can be used much more abstractly. It can be used to describe something that, although it may be still endowed by society, is issued as part of a cultural phenomenon and therefore cannot be revoked. I am a white male in society, and as such I have certain privileges due to the society I have found myself in that cannot be taken away. The government can try to alleviate the injustice of my privilege, but they cannot take it away completely. Therein lies the distinction between the two.
5hift mentions that privilege is given based on a family's history of effort, and while this is probably debatable in itself, it still only pertains to the first definition. Things like sex, race, etc. are truly 'assigned' in the since that nobody had to work for you to look the particular way that you do. Society's interpretation of you (in which lies the privilege) is independent of any effort that may have been put in not only by your parents but you as well.
