Yes, but then there is the stereotypical "artist". If a person came up to you on the street saying they're an artist, you wouldn't consider game creating. |

Mother 3 is a pretty good examples of video games being artistic. It's full of symbolism and themes. I'd like to see someone do a report of sorts on it.

Art has multiple meanings, one referring to the expression of human creativity and emotion, and another being a skill that requires much experience (eg. "The Art of War"). Creating a game requires far more than just being able to write a piece of software on a machine. Behind most games is a team of talented script writers, character artists, scenario designers, voice actors, composers, researchers, and many other creative individuals (although not all games feature all of the above roles and most are a combination of diverse talents). What makes it all work is when these people can take a single idea and let it grow to something that stimulates the player visually, audibly, and emotionally. And when it happens, the end result is nothing short of magical. This creativity can be expressed in many ways, from the cinematic storylines of the Legend of Zelda to the vast beautiful fantasy landscapes of The Elder Scrolls. Even the simplistic graphics of Minecraft can be used by the player to express their own imaginations and creations, which all encourage others to interpret these ideas in their own ways. In that respect, surely game design fulfils both definitions of an art? |
