Is gaming a form of art?

No, not playing the games. But are video games themselves a form of art?

Let's discuss.

I'll play a little devil's advocate here.
Why gaming is an art form:
Spoiler
creating a game from scratch is like painting an interactive picture. Art often is a representation or an emotion or concept from the maker. Games have this, such as Majora's Mask. Games also feature intense stories, often they elicit more emotion then movies or books. They create a atmosphere where anything is possible.

Why gaming is not an art form:
Spoiler
when do you ever create a game from scratch? Hell, 90% of call of duty gets re-used in the next addition. That would be like grabbing a finished painting and adding a small outer edge to the canvas and painting on it, than calling it a entirely new painting. Most games are not made with making the best game possible in mind. They are made in a way that most suits the producers wallets.

Those are just a few arguments.

What are your thoughts on this?

yes, they are. there's several forms of art that goes into making a video game.

Dusty 11-02-2015 07:41 PM

Gaming != Game development.

Crono 11-02-2015 08:06 PM

gaming is not art, but some video games have artistic merit

all imo of course~

Creating a video game is art.

Playing a video game is not art.

If you guys read up on Shigeru Miyamoto you'll find some pretty inspiring stuff about him like how he wanted to take the feeling adventure and discovery he felt as a kid and put it into a simulation for everyone to experience.

That is no different than art in any way besides it being an actual simulation.

Making a game is not art imo.
Its more of a form of development and technology, then to be "art".
There are "art" aspects in games, but that doesnt necessarily make the game a form of art.

For people who play games, its more of a hobby or sport then art as well.

if it has art in it, it's art

the art is a part of the game

and the question asks if games are art.

so, if it's a part of the game, then the game itself, must too be art.

I don't believe you can say "this is the art aspect of the game, but the rest isn't" because it all goes together to form something.

What makes a book art? The story? What makes the store in a video game less artistic than the story in a book? What about movies? Movies are art, and sometimes a video game can tell a better story than a movie can.

I think games are a compilation of different arts. There's the graphics, story, etc. that all contribute to what a game is. Each of these can be considered different forms of art, so I suppose combining them would make a piece of art as well.

Like brick said, i would consider graal a art because players make stuff, but creating a fps i wouldnt, because its a team just using software to create guns etc.

Basically the reason it's art: http://www.futurechips.org/thoughts-....X2DvSbau.dpuf

Everything is art.

because art is perceived....and the universe is fookn diverse.

PS dictionaries are bs cause humans created the words, so humans can change them to there hearts content. Its a cultures and an individual's solidarity with the word that keeps the intent and perception of a word meaningful.

Art is what someone believes.
its my opinion.

IMO Gaming is a sport. As an actual athlete, I don't think any sports are "arts"

that's also because Gaming isn't nationally known as a sport. And yes, some people consider sports a form of arts too. Judging by the site linked below, the majority does.
