I could honestly see home control systems being introduced in the near future, depending on how many appliance companies are willing to join in.

Surprisingly, technology like this actually exists. It's a cohesive collaboration between home automation and the Internet of Things.

Stuff like "locking your doors" can be achieved with an RFID or other electronic-based lock with a lockdown setting or such. This stuff isn't really mainstream yet but it certainly is out there. I'm interesting in seeing how it develops over the next decade or so, as well. Check out an article about Home Automation from PC Magazine.

Something that I have seen but haven't had the chance to try out yet are the Ubiquiti InWall Manageable Devices. These devices link into power and act as a basic circuit switch but with a twist: these can be controlled via the network. Devices can be set up on schedules or can be managed over the network. This seems like a more cost-effective and easier-to-implement home automation solution for simple things like lights that are standard and not DMX-based (which you would already be able to control through a DMX controller...).

Yeah, I know some of it exists, like home surveillance stuff and whatnot. I just mean that some company will probably introduce an easier way for other appliance manufacturers to plug-n-play with like a main computer that controls every aspect of your house. Right now there's a lot of competition going on that is moving toward that, but nothing that isn't brand-specific.

What I mean is like if General Electric made a home control system, it would need to be able to interface with any other brand and not just other GE products in order to be really successful.

Ah, I see. That will definitely be something to look for over the next few years.  

How about much more developed bathrooms? A better porta potty system?

Agreed. It would be nice to have some kind of mechanism that vacuums waste down into a separate enclosed compartment, similar to the way it's done on airplanes. Not just to get rid of the disgusting "crap in a box" aspect of it, but also to reduce the spread of disease among everyone who has to use one.

Might be a little improvement, but it could definitely be helpful.

I know those dudes at U of Surrey are making progress, but it'll be a while.

I'd be fine with a few GB/sec.

Robotics? Nah, thanks to China we are moving into the modification of live human embryos (an unborn or unhatched offspring in the process of development) and soon we'll be using technology to create the perfect children and get rid of disease.
