42 is supposed to be a perfect number, the meaning of life calculated by a computer. I don't know the whole story, but it's something like that.

And 69 is simply a sexual reference. I don't think I need to explain more.

Also, the number 42 seems to be unpopular in Japan as well.

In Japanese culture, the number 42 is considered unlucky because the numerals when pronounced separately — "shi ni" (four two) — sound like the phrase, "unto death". - From Wiki.
