Upcoming Dexterity Skill [READ]

http://i.imgur.com/FbhprKR.jpg

dexterity |dekˈsteritē|
the ability to easily move in a way that is graceful

Howdy everybody! In the near future, Ol'West will have special areas which are only accessible if you have a high enough Dexterity Level ("dex" for short). In addition to that, this won't be just for getting to special areas, it's also for getting to certain areas quicker. I want to collaborate with the community so that this upcoming update is the best that it can be!

While this is simply a concept right now, I have one thing actually ready to go. Currently, I have 2 posts with a rope connecting them for your player to walk across. I want this to be implemented in the best way possible. Should the player grab the posts to walk across? Should they tap the post? What's the best way?

Also, what are some good ideas for other types of boundaries to cross for higher levels?

I want to add a Dexterity Training Course for gang which take over a Gang Base possibly. Or perhaps it's accessible a different way?

Perhaps having a higher Dexterity Level allows you to walk quicker? Maybe we can add a Run or Sprint Feature which allows players to sprint for a short amount of time and it has to recharge? Having a higher level could make it recharge quicker or last longer?

These are just some of my ideas for the upcoming Dexterity Skill update. What are yours?

You really must like Runescape lol

I don't think the higher level dex. you are should equal faster movement. I mean I kind of agree, then I don't because it would be drastically unfair to newer players.

That's the only downfall I can really think of, but it would also make them work for it.

// With all these new skills being added, the tutorial for new players will need to be changed as well.

I actually just found out about Runescape having "Agility". Though it looks like it's only a member's skill. I was never a member on Runescape. Lots of games have Dexterity.

I think the sprint idea would be fun and great for combat.

I agree, I don't know if faster speed should be implemented for a higher level. That would make it hard and unfair, you're right.

Yes I plan to redo the tutorial and add mining + woodcutting so that new players just don't try to catch bugs for hours and also run in a base and die. Lol

Will you be able to use this in an event?

A race for example??

I think that's a fantastic idea. Though we would open all abilities in the event and not require a certain level?

Why not making Lasso more useful like you can use Lasso to go up a cliff. But you need to have a high enough Dex skill.

The player should grab the post, and afterwards an animation would show the player walking through the bridge. The bridge starts to shake and if the player has a high enough dexterity level, the animation shows the player running to the other side and making it. If they don't the animation shows the player stay in the middle of the bridge confused as the bridge is shaking, and it collapses. Or perhaps the animation shows the player getting scared and running back to the starting side.

To expand upon this, what if there was a small "skill" section on the right hand side of your screen. With this, you could have small utility skills, possibly a dash skill that makes you move quicker based on your dexterity level?
Example:
Dash Increases your movement speed by 12, lasts for Ten seconds
(Level 37 Dexterity the "ten" and "twelve" are increased based on dexterity level)
OTHER SKILLS TBA

Or, you could have a primary attribute selection which could give you a number of skills based on your primary attribute.
Example:
You have selected dexterity as your primary attribute, moving swiftly and eliminating anything that dares to step in your way, light on your feet you roam the lands of the west, with a new, fresh start on your mind.
Skills:
Dash ACTIVE Increases Movement speed for a short time.
Assassinate PASSIVE Increased Melee Damage while attacking enemies from behind
Bow Mastery PASSIVE Deal Increased Bow Damage based on your Dexterity Level
These are just some ideas that I came up with quickly, so don't be scared to expand upon them.

I feel that a class system like the one mentioned above would be interesting, you could easily have classes like Gunslinger and Skinner without straying far from the theme of Ol'West.

The term 'dexterity' just means speed to me. I agree that dexterity should not effect the speed of your player's running, but it should make them do some things faster. Maybe every other animation/activity speed is increased (i.e woodcutting, mining) or other relevant animation to speed apart from running or combat.

Just googled it, actual term is;
dexterity
dɛkˈstɛrɪti/
noun
skill in performing tasks, especially with the hands.

So it's actually relevant to the player not being faster with running.

Golden Panda 02-22-2015 09:30 PM

How do we earn this 'dexterity', does the level get higher with our other levels? or do we earn it in some other way where we start from level 0.
If we do start from level 0 how do we earn dexterity?

All skills start at level 1. You have to gain 83 experience in any skill to level up to level 2.

You'd earn Dexterity EXP from doing tasks which are undetermined at this time. (purpose of this thread)

Maybe you could climb up and down cliffs from anywhere? I like itkitts idea of having a lasoo kind of like a grappling hook to climb up cliffs. Maybe swim a bit faster? I dont like the running faster though. That would be a bit unfair.

Belak 02-22-2015 09:35 PM

Ik dexertity on some games increase speed on weapons and stuff so what if it increased your reload time?

also i think that being able to use dexirty to unlock new areas or hangouts or an alternative to get into a base would be cool.

Also this is not on topic but why is Firemaking released yet cuase i saw you testing it like a week ago and you said you were finishing it that day. Was there problems with the skill or are you waiting to release it with other things?
