I knew bam and jester would be the critical ones lol. Its a pretty OK first try. Atleast he had knowledge and attempted shading. Just each time you try to pixel art refer to what jester has posted- the shading tutorials should help you

Not trying to be mean just giving observations. I'm guessing he rushed it. If he spent more time on it then I would become better. No one gets a "that's great!" on their first one. I didn't lol. It's how you learn. It's not like I said it sucks and left it at that, I gave him a resource to refer to also. Just don't want to seem mean <3  

Don't use gradient to shade
