So you're saying someone would make a fake/fan website for, like, The Sims 10, while we don't even have The Sims 4?

No. They buy the domain and then keep it. Then
maybe if EA ever DOES get close to making a Sims 10 and they want the domain, the person who owns it practically ransoms it, and sells it for much higher than it's worth. It's called domain squatting.
And also yes, people could possibly use it for scams or such. I don't suspect we'll ever see a Sims 10, but with the direction many franchises are going(where they want annual releases) it's highly possible, especially if Sim's sticks around for another decade or so. However, EA gets most of their money off the Sim's franchise via expansion packs, not the actual game release... but it's good business to think ahead and avoid potential obstacles by assuming your franchise will survive that long.
