Newton's Favorite Mobile Games
I'm always seeing threads asking for mobile games. I consider myself to have extensive knowledge of iOS games. Specifically the older ones you may have never heard of. Myself; I'm a serious gamer. PC games, and current Gen systems. To my collection of Atari and NES systems. Since I've owned an iPod around the time the second gen was released, I've had some time to scavange the depths of the App Store. (and Play Store. Android will be getting some love too) Because of this I feel confident enough to share with you some games you may have not heard of. My goal here isn't to list the best games, but simply my favorites that you may not know of. There's no point in hearing another plea to download Flappy Bird. Here is my collection of favorite mobile games from as early as September 2008. Just note that there's no specific order to these games. Enviro-Bear 2010 http://a2.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Purple/v4/69/33/d7/6933d79a-07ab-f44e-c49f-19707dfaae37/icon350x350.jpeg (Unsupported image host) $1.99 iDevice Android A port of an Indie Game where your goal is to collect enough food to hibernate. Simply drive around the forest using one hand, and use the other to eat all the berries and fish that manage to make their way through your windshield. This game is weird as hell. But it's a damn good laugh. Although don't expect it to last more than an occasional play. Trenches http://a5.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Purple/v4/24/54/a9/2454a9a7-26ad-f290-6df9-cc67d88e2281/icon350x350.png (Unsupported image host) $0.99 iDevice No Android support A very easy to understand Strategy Game, where the goal is to reach (and destroy) the enemy base by using your funds to purchase more troops. It's got a nice pick up and play feel to it, and now claims to support online play which is a plus. Ouch! http://a3.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Purple/v4/62/ab/2a/62ab2a25-eaf5-067b-afe4-a1857e361fc2/icon350x350.png (Unsupported image host) $0.99 iDevice No Android Support Essentially Turbo Dismount in an iPod game. It's a Physics sandbox game with minimal control. While the game may not look pretty, I've wasted quite some time back then experimenting with this app. Idiotic fun, is all it is. Zombie Pizza http://a1.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Purple/v4/22/ea/b9/22eab9df-cb58-f8d7-fd9d-576c342def32/icon350x350.png (Unsupported image host) $0.99 iDevice No Android Support The horde is hungry. It's obvious what they want. Pizza! Because who doesn't love pizza? The goal is to make combinations of pizza fast enough. If you don't the horde gets too hungry, and will break in. Horror Racing http://a2.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Purple/v4/37/a6/c1/37a6c137-cf41-8534-ad6c-0cba5f2e331a/icon350x350.png (Unsupported image host) FREE iDevice No Android Support TWISTED METAL! CARMAGEDDON! VIGILANTE 8! Combat racing that's inspired by those car combat franchises. The best part; IT'S NOW FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I've had loads of fun with this one. Definitely one of my old time favorites. Hook Champ http://a1.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Purple/v4/46/fb/b2/46fbb2b0-c9b2-54ad-9f27-cca9819f17e2/icon350x350.jpeg (Unsupported image host) $2.99 iDevice No Android support This game was without a doubt my favorite iOS game of the time. The idea is an Indiana Jones style "rolling rock" booby trap, except it's got a very addictive grappling hook mechanic, and instead of a giant rolling boulder it's a ghost... demon... skull... frog... The game also has some pretty sneaky (cheesy) comedy thrown into the dialouge... and HATS Wind-up Knight https://lh3.ggpht.com/EGHyA920vz4-wg8_Ec7mV5yY4zWKvL8uQVgbHtY3-drHxVHUdobM25ah_1Go_I3Qpv0=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iDevice Android To my surprise not many people know about this game. It's pretty well done. The graphics are beautiful, and the gameplay is simple (but don't let that fool you. The game does get challenging.) Although it does have in-game purchases, I still highly recommend it. I have PLENTY of these apps. In fact probably a lot that no one hear has heard of. If anyone is interested I'd love to post all that I can.

Yes sir. Muffin Knight https://lh5.ggpht.com/V8PrNAGdeeQCN6wbbXX0T64GV0g6qFdUSBmyE98E0qn_uEptuB2S48hdilLI4CZWqrM=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) iDevice FREE Android $0.99 The goal is to collect all the muffins without getting hit by the enemy. However every muffin you pick up will switch you to a different character, each with different unique powers. The Sandbox: Craft Play Share/Pixel World Builder https://lh6.ggpht.com/xBb2T91Jl544-HCFqSAto2hgBPcIKNFhbtQRxSINUEwCxSiA6IX-2PnMIxd0yZvzL-s=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iDevice Android A Sandbox world builder that gives you a set of goals to complete the stage, similar to Scribblenauts (Which is also available on iOS and Android) There is a free play mode which allows you to use everything you've unlocked in story mode. X-Plane 9 https://lh6.ggpht.com/xjHLm4AiEIyqYCScStsqKMWI4Z2XE7fLEym08NA0QdvA4CbuGwxfkDtWMuL73BPrZg=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iOS URL is broken. Alternatively you can search "X-Plane 9" on the App Store. Android A flight simulator that attempts to mimic real life airplane controls. Age of Wind 2 https://lh5.ggpht.com/bVXdcAv1oPO3QXTiOIFRC8W83rJ7Qu0EBFJP_H9jqmFmGM9nkdNAtaiZH64u6XsuT5Cd=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) $0.99 iDevice Android Can't remember the exact goals since I didn't get to into this, but from what I remember there's always an objective. Usually to sink another ship. You can also save up to purchase even more powerful pirate ships. Forsaken Planet https://lh6.ggpht.com/gtnDjcEvJW-n1a63LzkeL04nSoVWwy3kXMcWs9uw2ah-ni34O-PPba2x2N2STAsZew=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE No iDevice Support Android I could never figure this game out. From what I could tell, it was clearly a PvP based game, but beyond that it was just too weird. Maybe you guys will enjoy it. Can't go wrong at the price of nothing. Tiny Legends: Heroes https://lh3.ggpht.com/yQEAODdVtvNKp_jUVztO2Bna_JjW7nQMolb_CrVo4K3MJhyGjEEYM-Mpqjy-39UnlC3b=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iDevice Android A hint of Diablo in this dungeon crawler hack and slash. It does have some heavy in app purchases in it sadly. SHADOWGUN: Deadzone https://lh3.ggpht.com/YiYiZMKKEFkzp6x5bDO_SAWDVuQCMO870IwGMs-lGjG0MYtRTNWq39e3BB1gv2bbzg=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iDevice Android You may have heard of the original SHADOWGUN, which was a spoof of the game Gears of War. It only included a campaign though. SHADOWGUN: Deadzone is the multiplayer part. Keep in mind, this is another in-app purchase heavy game. Judge Dred vs Zombies https://lh5.ggpht.com/D-hzMEi1wFWsXQGpEAC1qczhwxtMhUZPjcUM6VRuBi-3yP403iJjmNqmoOL4mYqqB4ba=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iOS Android Released to promote the movie Dred 3D. This is a zombie game where you play as Dred. It does has a campaign mode. Nothing too deep. Winter Sun MMORPG https://lh3.ggpht.com/9Yl4irB_a6iNTq4Rw5F8ot7SD_mRO5QlYKNruPKpv3Uj9N46NaBQqKHlh0K2VhlZoEg=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE No iDevice Support Android I remember talking to the developer of this game a long time ago. I honestly never thought he would get it done, but from the looks of it, the game seems pretty solid. Counter Strike Portable/Critical Missions: SWAT https://lh4.ggpht.com/xkeVgdwZ5bmFjG0SzXpXGRnVP15PDc0Nj_gdu9taQt2spLEkZm-aRfJZuC2eK9YiwFOn=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iDevice Android I believe this was the game Ghettoicedtea was talking about. It's a clone of Counter Strike. It does have a pay to win concept. But as Ghettoicedtea mentioned you can get past this buy simply watching a video to unlock the weapons. (note that you still need to buy the weapons via in-game funds.) SAS: Zombie Assualt 3 https://lh5.ggpht.com/nMoXcPbgVK7MkmmB0XMO5Jv00WD4EfWdnN3QPnuJhZRm43LJZRtufosDvpgbw3G2FA-_=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iDevice Android A Coop Zombie Survival. This is one of my favorite Android games simply due to the coop. The in-app purchases do exist, but aren't bad at all. The game is prone to value editors though. Dungeon Defenders: Second Wave https://lh3.ggpht.com/NtM0Qp1VqxjdnFWznx9Ow17iv3uK2Sr4L4ey4iaOcbiwHYyeUsSXLS2nSV_9HBQ0cww=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) iOS $2.99 Android FREE While obviously not as good as the PC version, it was a pretty impressive port of one of my all time favorite games that I still play today. I own it on pretty much every console it's available on. If you don't know what Dungeon Defenders is. It's a third person tower defense game that allows you to fight live during the waves, instead of only relying on your defenses in most TD games. It may have been taken off of the Play Store. If that's the case I don't mind giving the apk. Since it was free at the time. Call of Mini: Zombies https://lh5.ggpht.com/s4R9yT0swMozHuU9AcQ_FRvX4zc-UBEa9EI-gWsY-5Cz7KdQuXlng3S7myUn2aNYgoA=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iOS Android I'm not sure if it's possible for it to mimic Call of Duty: Zombies any more than it does. It's got coop online, which is always my favorite. It does support in-app purchases but it's not too harsh. Death Rally https://lh6.ggpht.com/3S39jHKm5Yc76kWmsLMRJS6k6qCUiEVL2aOZN23DlvHb2AhiQ5ANl1sMV_E_V2hMhEQ=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) iDevice $0.99 Android FREE A recreation of an old PC game with the same title, Death Rally is another car combat racer. Similar to games like Carmageddon. Super Bit Dash/Super Bit Bash https://lh5.ggpht.com/jk1gVS8GHnQRMVN5kPHo4jppG2ZQ6YR8jqlOVuxNiTwmfRJm5v-DHyZTKMXLFUnHB2s=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iOS Android This was my Flappy Bird before Flappy Bird was a thing. It's a very simple game to play. Zombie Wonderland 2: Outta Time! https://lh6.ggpht.com/Apn_gvXok_HE-AuAbby9KxUQOwyixFYvfcruib97MrIZY8L4AkQWxkK_cEbdeXePkr8=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iOS Android You've been given the job to watch over specific buildings, and make sure no zombies get in, because decaying corpses can leave a mess. Iron Wars https://lh6.ggpht.com/0y6E_ROwTKBlSPi3RrChPxRRjhwM3pCgPjJ8ye3reQE3hm1SMBI-ndp3AOcEdpgcbaku=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iOS Android Practically Minigore, but PvP. (if you haven't played Minigore, try that out right this second.) Vendetta Online https://lh6.ggpht.com/aPGd2deF8ldQElv5EyQHgeexOXrzx6LgCqdbWWJP8qajGSAr6vWi7a-PksjoL00S8Ho=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) iDevice $0.99 Android FREE A Space MMO ported to mobile. This MMO revolves around space ships. Interesting is the fact you never actually leave your ship in this game. Something like that is unique for an MMO. Warspear Online https://lh4.ggpht.com/Uq65pZh-DuzYd6es-3PGaXvf1RX9NKxgRfjj1vTADFexfiEUx8xg2Sgiu3GWakyeXRE=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) FREE iDevice Android If I could only choose one mobile MMO to play for the rest of my life. It would probably be this one. It's a very polished 2D pixel art MMO. It has some WoW inspired elements like races and factions. Sadly I never got the chance to get into it. As much as I would love to. Onlive https://lh4.ggpht.com/uHZ3fQJzwNJOKsfB17_GWtYTZdLLYHGziTRfebita8hXcj8gVXp_ZlY6ktn9mbZL0IW3=w300-rw (Unsupported image host) No iDevice Support Android If you've wanted to play the latest gen games but don't have a dedicated console then shame on you for not knowing about this. I'm still blown away by this technology. I can't even begin to explain how it works. Although it does require a decent speed internet connection. (I recommend 5mb p/s over wifi.)
