Think of it like levels of a building.. You can take stairs up to the next level, and take the stairs back down to the lower level. Together, they make a single building. Also, the term "mapping" refers to drawing out a map rather than exploring it. map·ping [noun] the act or operation of making a map |

BUT levels require being forced to load a single level at a time OR being forced to go from one level to the next to go to the next level(example : mario bros) while maps are total free roam require not to of such(example : runescape)). I know it sounds confusing...but when you actually grasp what I mean you will understand.

Those are also considered levels. You must be confusing the term "levels" with the traditional thought of "from point A to point B" in games like the Mario Bros. The word "stage" probably fits this description better. The word "level" covers more than just that.
