Below are a simple Bazaar and mini town I made. Nothing too fancy or something that would make you go crazy over. i mainly just made it because i was bored and wanted to use this public tileset ( ill leave a link to it if anyone wants it. amazing tileset). I created levels for every house you enter as well as multiple rooms for each, Created cave systems. Animated the water and also animated the flags and some grass parts so they move with the wind. Animated the waterfall, and even set up an animation that allows the lily pads to move around if a character goes in the water. and gets close to them. And most importantly set up collision on every item so your character doesn't walk on the buildings. And I even did other small things like creating a simple system for when you buy potions, Mana potions. even made in a simple health system and mana system. to go with it and created bandit AI for the player to fight and level up against. Although I didn't create a character. And how long did it take to create all this? literally made everything in 1 study hall in school which is about 40 minutes for me. And this would take even less time for Classic's staff. As I'd imagine there tileset is already set up for certain things to have collision or not, Any animated objects would already be ready and animated the moment u place it in. Any AI is already created unless they create new ones, And most importantly there is more than 1 person working on the level. And even as dusty said in another thread. They created the entire north wilderness area in apparently a day. I doubt even that long. So if they seriously wanted to, Creating Babord would not take a lot of time at all. |

Factor in that Graal uses it's own scripting language as well so a lot of premade tools you see in various editors just don't exist for the Graal editor, and they are harder to make because the language is obsolete and limiting (I personally don't really script using the language, but most fancy tools you see often make use of several languages - and ones that get updated to be more functional). Also factor in they are being published for a live MMO, so naturally a lot more work goes into fine tuning details and making sure everything will work properly. Your 40 minute town is extremely bland and rushed and it's very easy to tell. Crono has been making Graal levels for well over 6 years so he is probably the most experienced expert in this thread on the matter, I also know he enjoys doing it and while I can't say if the other devs do or not, I know that enjoying it makes you want to put more work into it and making it the best you possibly can. Maybe you can do a 40 minute rough rough rough draft, but you're looking at a lot more time if you want it to be polished and presentable. It's not like staff are just slow and bad at creating levels, they just have to follow a specific schedule for content release and what they spend their time working on. |

I struggle to grasp exactly why it would take them long. While no I don't know what editor the staff use. But I couldn't see why even if it was badly outdated. It's just simply placing tiles and setting certain things with collision. And animate things if needed like flags or water. Not saying they are bad at level designing, but just saying level designing in itself shouldn't take long. Unless the game design engine the staff use is so bad that it doesn't even have the ability to place multiple tiles at once. I've used engines from Unreal,Unity, Gamebryo. And even custom engines for this Solarus community which is just a bunch of Zelda like games. It's game engine you had to script everything, even collision. And even with that game engine it took at most and hour and a half to create something probably close to the size as the the image I posted above. |

@Rusix I invite you to fire up level editor + one of million classic map backups and mimic swamptown, both the swamp shapes themselves and all the detailing. If you wanna sink even more time, try experimenting with the cliffs. You'll see it's not as fast as you think it is.

After reading this statement, I can only assume you aren't familiar with how much of a jumbled mess Classic pics1.png is, even after I have used pics1.png in the editor for awhile you can't rememer where any tile you need is, so it requires you to hunt for the one you want. And then you have to make everything actually look nice. Using 57 million different dirt path edge tiles, and 37 different exterior house walls that are the same??? And then, cliffs. They are truly a *****. Anything higher than one tier of cliffs, for me = mathematic equations, sleepless nights and and alcohol addictions. Spoiler

Don't all iServers use a (custom) online level editor which is accessible through a command in-game? I know Ol'West had an online one and it was very easy to use, adding custom tilesets was incredibly easy and you could select npc objects with preset code from a list so they were ready for use as soon as you placed them. If they have one then I'd assume the current number one mobile server(classic) does too |

I just done some digging around in Google for the tileset.which I'll post below, It was in another thread. One is named pics1.png but another isn't but looks more Classic like with trees and whatnot. And from what I see from the get-go is just how unorganized this thing is. 0 spacing, ect. I'll remake the tileset this weekend for you guys if that helps in terms of finding things, Ect. Might be one of the most unorganized tileset i seen, I'll get playerworlds tonight, and as well as remake the tileset this weekend so it could help you guys. |
