In my opinion i think the DS products are past their time, but games like mario are what keep it's industry going

The 3DS is a full successor to the DS, just like the Gameboy Advance was a full successor to the gameboy. If 'past its time' means selling 30 million units in less than 2 years WITHOUT having a Pokemon title yet, then I'm glad the 3ds is past its time. And classifying 'Mario' into one category is silly by the way. Mario Kart, Paper Mario, and the Super Mario series are completely different genres and completely different franchises. Mario is just a mascot, not a game franchise.
