iOS may not have the freedoms Android do but it is a much more smooth and user-friendly experience. Android can be very intimidating unless you get a Google made phone.
Even Android lovers have to agree with me on that point.
Probably the LG G2 or Nexus 5.
I got my Note 2 Feb 2013 though, never had a phone this long before where I havent felt like its outdated already or the new model is way better.

Nexus 5 is beautiful would have got it but heard bad things about it's battery life.

Most if not all the features of an iPhone 5 for half the price.

Apple wasn't going for a brand new phone. They should have kept the five tbh. When the iPhone 6 comes out the 5S will be $99 thus rendering the 5C obsolete.
5S is an extremely fast phone though. The A7 chip and 64-bit capabilities will make it a long lasting phone.
