Acrobatics + Gem is a nice little combo for one-turn damage, but you lose out on any damage boost (which hurts a LOT considering its painfully low base 81 attack) in Flare Blitz which is heavily needed for neutral coverage against the likes of Skarmory and Flying resists. 252+ Atk Talonflame: Flare Blitz vs. 224 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 120-142 (36.69 - 43.42%) -- 99.27% chance to 3HKO Acrobatics + Gem is okay if you're going for an early-mid game sweeper if you use it in tandem with Swords Dance, but otherwise, it's really only strong on the first move and pales in comparison past that to Life Orb Brave Bird. And in that aspect, it's largely outclassed by LO Greninja. Recoil isn't a problem considering Talonflame should be used as an end-game sweeper with spin support somewhere on your team, its too frail to deal with the rest of the popular threats in the metagame right now in Aegislash and Azumarill, the two of most used in XY right now, with Aegislash coming in at number one. This is the Talonflame set I'm using, experimented with it for a few days now, and it performs amazingly when used as an end-game sweeper to secure the win. Rapid Spin support is compulsory. Reign (Talonflame) (F) @ Life Orb Ability: Gale Wings EVs: 80 HP / 252 Atk / 176 Spd Adamant Nature - Flare Blitz - Swords Dance - Roost - Brave Bird The EVs are specialized to outspeed positive Speed natured, max invested Thundurus-T which is the fastest threat in OU that resists Brave Bird - every other threat in OU takes neutral/super-effective damage from priority Brave Bird, so EVs are not placed to outspeed those. The rest of the EVs are placed in HP to help mitigate the %HP damage Talonflame takes from Brave Bird/Flare Blitz. It works really well even in mid-game if Aegislash and TTar are removed, it can switch in on a Steel or something like Breloom, force it out, Swords Dance, and sweep. tl;dr im a fgrt |

(edit: it does) Also @Talon, the reason I'd use Acrobatics + Flying Gem is because if you use LO you're stuck with 2 moves with recoil as well as LO damage and potential stealth rock, which really puts you on a timer. Given Talonflame's (pseudo?) priority and access to SD, I'd prefer to not have it knock itself out. Speculation: Mega Latios is Dragon/Psychic with Adaptability Stats: 80/110/80/180/110/140 Mega Latias is Dragon/Fairy with Multiscale Stats: 80/80/110/110/180/140 |

You can use Talonflame as an AcroGem set if it's going to fill the role of a mid-game sweeper, but I find that with its frailty and very subpar attack stat, it does best as an end-game clean-up once its counters have been taken out by the likes of Terrakion or other Fighting-types that can deal with Rock (its hardest counter) properly. Even with LO and assuming against full-HP OHKOs (worst case scenario) with 80 HP EVs, it can fire off at least 3 Flare Blitzes/Brave Birds before going down, more often than not taking down at least two, if not completely finishing off the whole team. I can see an AcroGem set working if you run Swords Dance and force something out, but its still largely outclassed by the likes of Hawlucha or Lucario.

Also another question that may never be answered because noone cares, but would help my strategy greatly: Can Embargo prevent or prohibit mega evolution, and can something like thief undo it? |
