It's mostly people just thinking that they are too cool for cartoony games. They want the games they play to be an experience, and the "silly Nintendo games" don't give the immersion they are looking for. Nintendo doesn't try to make immersive games; they just make games that are fun to play.

People also tend shun concepts and tropes that contrast what concepts and tropes society has placed upon them. Someone who plays a high-quality, realistic first-person shooter will make any excuse they can to get out of changing the views on gaming that society says that person must have. How many times have you seen someone say that a game is bad but have never played the game they are calling bad? It's typically a case of "I like these kinds of games so I cannot possibly like these ones." Pushing away ideas contrary to one's own is a basic human behavior, and it's the same with video games.

No matter how silly the reasoning is behind an opinion is I would never disregard anyone's right to have one. It would be nice if people would acknowledge that other people are allowed to have their own opinions.
