If all this isn't working for you (I can't see why not because I've manually backdated in 1.7 to 1.6.6) You could always try MC Nostalgia I personally haven't tried it but I've heard good things about it, so I'm not the one to ask if things go wrong, just follow the instructions on the thread and you should be ok.
