get on gimp click layer>transperecy>add alpha channel>magic wand tool on the background>ctrl x or right click edit>cut

If you already have background on the same layer with the custom. Simply click the background with the magic wand tool and press Del or Backspace Make sure the background isn't a similar colour as the custom to be safe. |
