Opinion on the AKG K701?

AKG K701 ($275) - These are another legendary set produced by AKG, which is one of the best - and not just at its price point - headphones in regards of midrange, and especially soundstage. The overall sound signature does not provide much punch to its bass, but has a great mid-forward sound complemented by nice treble. Now, these have a couple downsides based on your personal preferences, and it includes extreme need for amping, as as mentioned, weaker bass. It's also open-back, but if he's going to be using these mostly for home, and can get these to work with a decent $150 amp whicthese would be spectacular.

Pros: Amazing soundstage, fantastic mids and trebles, iconic look (featured in quite a few animes)
Cons: Shy but deep bass, requires powerful amp, open-backed

Overall just really nice headphones, especially for the price. Wouldn't recommend to the average consumer, though. Not bass-oriented and soundstage might not be appreciated.

I saw imitation beats in a Kmart catalogue for like $10 and laughed really hard.  

I saw some at Walmart for 15 bucks just stacked up on one of those forklift palettes.
Feel sorry for any kid who's parents get them those for Christmas.

Just browsed and saw these ones, any good? They look good too more subtle though. I understand they're more budget headphones but that's what I'm looking for.
I really like how these look regardless of the specs, I would like something that looks good like those ones.  

The Sennheiser HD280 I've tried at Best Buy before, and I can't say it was suited for EDM or harder genres. It's really basslight with a treble-centric sound signature. I think the AKG K240 might fare better, though. FWIR on Head-Fi, it has a smoothed out signature like the more expensive ATH-M50 with good bass impact but slightly lacking in the midrange. You could go for those if you'd like. Read up on some reviews about it, since I unfortunately don't know too much about them. Grado headphones are also legendary for all sorts of metal/rock/EDM but they're pretty retro looking and open-backed and on-ear.

Does semi-open cancel noise very well?  

Definitely not as well as closed-back, but it will attenuate a good amount of ambient sound. I'd say it would be able to block out a good 90% of ambient noise in a mall or something.

Well, I haven't bought the Etymotics from your previous recommendation yet, since I don't have the money for them. However, the Skullcandys I so stupidly bought broke on me, so I'm going to need another recommendation.
