Apparently a couple vials containing Smallpox was located in a unused storage room of a lab. The vials were not breached, and nobody was exposed.

Thoughts?

The Centers for Disease Control have already obtained them, so no worries, really.

They always keep a few samples of every virus around in case they are needed to make vaccines in the future.

If it has mutated, that's even better. Then they'll have a new strain of it to study and use for future vaccines.

However, since it has been locked away for a while, there's a good chance it won't be since mutations are triggered either by outside sources, (like radiation and contact with other microbes) or from continual reproduction. Since it has been frozen for such a long time, the chances of either of those things happening are slim. Viruses can only replicate inside of other living cells, which they have not been in contact with.

Yes. It has mostly been eradicated, but we always need to keep some of it on hand in case problems arise. Same for other debilitating diseases.
