When I was growing up, being a nerd/geek was something that was kind of frowned upon. Playing videogames, being good with technology, etc was something that would get you bullied in school.
Nowadays, being a nerd/geek is almost seen as cool. People wear hipster glasses without actual lenses just for their appearance. Designer stores make shirts that say "nerd". Teens used to steer away from technology, now they can't go 5 minutes without using the internet/social media.
Some of the most popular musicians of our time are nerds themselves. Electronic music has moved on to become a mainstream music genre, which is generally created by nerds/geeks that can actually understand complex music composition software and audio equipment.
Gaming is becoming more and more mainstream. 10 years ago if you were a gamer, you would be told to get a life, go out and party, etc. Now if you're a gamer, it's generally accepted unless you game all day and never leave the house.
Nerd culture is not only de-stigmatized, but its essentially being glorified in modern days.
I've noticed something. Being a weaboo carries a similar image to what being a nerd/geek did 10 years ago. Those that are obsessed with anime are viewed in the same form of "loser" stereotype that geeks/nerds were 10 years ago. It's viewed as weird, antisocial, etc.
TL;DR: Normies started gaming, now they hate on weaboos.
