Because that’s all it was and still is, it existed years before they made that quest, and it was just a convenient item to start it off (starving guy in cave).
Golden apples have a major role in Norse mythology, that’s the only reason they’re being sold, and it’s not in a way that would make sense for a mini-quest involving them.

I would have to disagree, their could be a quest revolving around the Golden Apple.
I say this because in Greek Mythology the golden apple is used in several different Greek Mythological Stories, and if it is a major role in Norse they probably could intertwine those two painting. (This depends on if the second painting is Greek or not).
