Narcissists, which are in many cases the popular kids, tend to enjoy using people. When you give them something to use you for, you enter the popular group. Once you're in, you have one of two choices: take over, or leave.
For example, my video production and technical skills (mostly) got me into helping the popular group in various projects. I was in. They aren't necessarily rude, but just have that tendency to "need help." I have a girlfriend and she and I don't really give a flying **** about being popular, so I've been kinda balancing on the tightrope with my "popularity status" lately. Meaning, I'm on the fine line between being popular and not being popular solely because I know my boundaries.
I've developed relationships by simply helping people, and I tend to fit in all cliques because I enjoy helping people. In that sense, I am popular but not in the way you hope to achieve.
I made it onto homecoming court so I suppose that says something. You don't have to be a total douche to be popular.
