I don't get how you think Pokemon alone is a selling point for the 3DS.
A lot of people have a 3DS but guess what, even more people have a phone.

Doesn't matter how many people have phones.
Nintendo isn't in the phone selling business, IAP's alone are nothing compared to the sales they make marketing new games to devices they sell such as the 3ds, which a lot of people who like Pokemon are willing to buy.
Common sense.
