Also Read the manga, the ending felt forced and rushed. They practically had two choices, reveal the twist or not. Through the manga, the reveal was had a much better shock factor and eased in nicely while the anime just blatantly put it right there in front of you with no build up or anything. The anime had two choices, both bound to get some backlash, either go with what they did and try to make an eventful ending, or not. I would prefer they tried to steady the relationship between the character and just show their bonds growing and leave the plot twist for the second season, but then it could also feel forced jumping right into it. But what can you do, anime is time restricted while novels have the freedom of space.
On another note about how anime is made, it sucks that Taboo Tattoo have to relocate their animation budget to specific scenes, while the fights are glorious, everything else with still long key frames are unsettling on the eyes.
