1 individual doesn't mean a whole race.
But most hispanics use it all the time to define a white person. It doesn't matter if it was based on sports, it's still a racist term. They didn't choose their nickname, another race gave them that name, and people tend to use it to mock white people.
It's the same logic if someone said, "I don't see how wetback is racist, it means back cross river."

You seriously compare Gringo with Trump in terms of racism??
He supports an imbecile who wants to close the borders to almost everyone, what makes you think he deeply inside doesn't has a grudge against hispanics? And don't compare a word created to tell US soldiers in green uniforms (USA vs Mexico war) to go back home with wetback which IS a more insulting word since it is related to slavery and/or mocking someone working in what you consider a ****ty hard job.
Gringo applies to any skin color, it is our way to call you and I think the source of it is 0 racist unlike yours.
And please, bringing and explaining ****** won't make it better. With nothing more than point out the fact you are defending a racist pig that started the source of all this and you help him boost his insignificant graal reputation, which is sad you guys think it matters, goodnight.
