I'm not trying to pick a fight, this is actually a serious question, but what makes a male a male or a female a female if not for their sex? Is it determined by behavior? Personality?

I was thinking about this, and gender just seems pointless. You can be a boy and like 'girl things' yet still be a boy, same goes for girls too. It's like gender was created out of expectations - boys were expected to do x while girls were expected to do y - and now since it's 2016 and most people are cool with everything people just want to stick labels on things.
I understand that body dysmorphia is a very real thing, but do feel bad for those that feel they can't meet society constructs/ 'expectations' of their sex so must identify with a gender.
