No, it does. As long as you get in at least one hit (with your SWORD, no bombs/arrows), you'll get spoils.

And it can definitely jump pretty far. So make sure your screen is zoomed out.

Nope. If you hit the blob you got Slimy spoils no matter the damage. I found that a bit cheap since you could literally just hit it with an arrow and forget about it. So I wanted to encourage actually participating and hunting it.
