The same is true with Bernie Sanders. My point being, calling it 100% self funded is kind of misleading, nor is it accurate.

It is accurate, because Trump has access to more than enough funds to run his entire campaign, probably for the next decade if he needed to. Bernie Sanders doesn't, which could lead to making certain statements or holding certain positions if it means funding his campaign.
If you have $20m and someone gifts you $1m to you to buy a small house, you aren't in desperate need of that. You're grateful, but that isn't affecting you on the same level as someone who has $20k with $1m gifted to them. People who are in actual need of money begin to feel dependent on donors and are easier to manipulate.
