Pokémon aren't slaves. When trainers capture them in Pokéballs, then they become slaves. Ever notice how when a Pokémon is defeated, they just get sent back into the Pokéball? Or how when a Pokémon refuses to listen to their trainer, back into the Pokéball they go? Punishment. If you knew the horrors that went on inside those Pokéballs, you'd go in your PC box and release every single one of your "trained" Pokémon on the spot. They're trained alright. Once they come out for a forced battle or to do some menial task, they know that if they screw things up it only means more pain for them. Next time a shady Pokémart shop keeper asks if you're interested in "catching" Pokémon, report him to the nearest Officer Jenny as soon as possible. Pokémon are willing to become friends, and help you on their own. There's no need to trap them in little prisons and carry them around like objects.
