I feel like you're missing the core of what he has said because he mentioned "freedom of speech" with it. My understanding is that he feels like 'rate the game 1 star until they fix lag' has the ability to marginalize the actual issue of the game lagging, and in doing so, may remove the capacity for getting the message that "hey, the game is lagging really badly" across. Promoting negative ratings, being passed off more as people causing trouble, and therefore trivializing the actual issue when this is (supposedly) getting the attention of management. That is what he means by "taking away their freedom of speech" because people might disagree with the issue being represented this way, but won't be able to take another route while this kind of campaigning is going on. Yes it is the wrong application, but so is its use in the opening post.
With that in mind, maybe your response was kind of heavy-handed? I think it is healthy for people in a community to provide different perspectives like this. His other mentions of the concept of 'freedom of speech' aren't wrong.
