how about another world where monsters attack whilst you gain, requiring weapons for defense and you get more more than normally.

I like that idea! Maybe I'll have a type of "server list" to chose from onload that will specify whether there are monsters on the server or not. Or possibly just to simplify before the release, I'll have 2 worlds that players can chose to hop from. Though I'll need to make the second world a bit challenging to have the noobs spend some time in the first world slowly gaining experience and coins.
