Yup. Western is like medieval style(kinda what graal kingdoms buildings look like), whereas eastern has a more asian style kind of buildings.

I'm rolling on west because that's what I figured most of my friends would prefer, although I'll probably be building an eastern styled house on the western continent

Elves and Nuia's are western continent, Haranhi and Ferran are on the eastern continent. If you're dead set on rolling Ferran or Haranhi you can still join the guild, although you'll need teamspeak to communicate and it'll be a lot harder to help you out early on.
