The controller is meant to be a bridge between PC gaming and console gaming, given the nature of the Steam Machine devices. It would need to be able to play games that require a mouse. There actually is plenty of things wrong with analogue sticks, especially with first person shooters. They cannot emulate the same range of motion that a mouse can, and are reduced to controlling the momentum of the screen rather than the actual positioning of the screen itself. If you think about it a little its pretty logical why they would come up with a controller like this. Heck, its also perfectly symmetrical so its very easy to accommodate left handed people.

Yes, a mouse and keyboard is better than analog sticks, but I don't see how THIS is better than analog sticks. I HATE using trackpads on laptops even, so I don't see how this is some improvement over even analog sticks.
Also the lack of a d-pad is a big drawback imo. Some people might not care, but I can't play precision games(like platformers) without a firm, nice d-pad. 360 controller and its floaty d-pad sucks, and I can't see that track pad being any sort of improvement over even that.

I don't think its overall design is that horrible or that the crease will get in the way given the shape of the controller.

That crease certainly does look like it'd be a pain for my thumb to rest on, but the thing about ergonomics is that first-impression usually don't mean much. You gotta have it in your hand for at least an hour before you see how it truly feels in your hands. The DS(and all its future iterations) give me the same problems. Feels fine at first, but after playing a little it cramps my hand up horrible. Not saying this would cramp my hand up, but I really, really don't like that crease. It seems completely unnecessary.
In fact, its getting pretty much universal acclaim from people who have tried it out. Don't believe me? Read this blog by the creator of Super Meat Boy. He's super picky about controllers and seems to be fine with the Steam Controller.

I'll just wait until I try it myself.
