I tried to work on a ladies Mac laptop a little while ago. It was PLENTY powerful, and she had upgraded the RAM and such... but she couldn't update ****. I tried to update Firefox for her, but it wouldn't let her. She had an oooooold version of Firefox.
It wouldn't update because Firefox was only suited for Mac OS 10 or something, and her laptop was OS 8. Despite the fact her hardware was plenty suited she was stuck with a Firefox version from like, 2000 unless she paid for a new OS.

That's because Mac OS 8 was released 16 years ago, and Apple completely redesigned their operating system in the year 2001 with Mac OS 10.
Apple treats first-decimal updates as Windows treats a whole new number, so Mac OS 8 essentially is 10 major updates behind the current version.
(Don't forget their transition from PowerPC processors to Intel in 2006. Lots of compatibility changes.)
