I don't really think its a gimmick, it seems like it is going to be used for some interesting puzzles, considering the game is from a top down perspective. A gimmick usually means that there is no legitimate reason for it to exist.

Not always. The drawing thing would have been neat if it was a one-off type of thing for a dungeon, but it seems to be a new feature that you use throughout. Quite lame imo.
