I'd be interested to know how other games deal with issues such as this. Googling 'How do MMORPGs deal with peodphiles?' isn't returning anything though.

You could make it mandatory for a player to add their birthday when playing for the first time. (Obviously not to be displayed on their profile.) Depending on the age of the player, you could monitor the private messages or make the censorship more strict.
That's the only preventative measure I can think of.
