"Apk's" are easy, fast to install on your android device.
And the device does not need to be rooted(JB).
Unlike the ipod/iphone/ipad which has to be JB to get installous, and yeah, it takes alot of time to down'd an app such as : NFS:Most wanted (example).

Downloading isn't really from the device you're using, practically from the Internet speed and 20% comes from the device's CPU (call them core)
+ this is why androids have low priority in protection, you can install anything with in it's default count (no root) so there is no use of buying apps anymore, means Android Market can end up dead soon enough.
