I support celebrating the commercialized aspects of Christmas on public communities such as graal, but delving into things such as advent tend to be much more religious based at least from where I live.
It can be argued that Christmas stemmed off of the roman holiday Saturnalia (that celebrated the Romans winning a war, by giving gifts to loved ones) but was slowly transformed (and renamed) into a religious holiday after the reign of Charlemagne. There are many, many other origins of it before the birth of Christ. Just a note. Regardless if that is relevant, Christmas is not really exclusively a religious holiday since its influence is far beyond that now and spans many cultures. Its been around for thousands upon thousands of years and it has been celebrated many different ways, I really wish more people would recognize its dynamic nature since its not actually based on one idea. Its a mash up of many different cultures and it constantly adopts new ideas. That's why its generally accepted for public products (Such as Graal) to celebrate it. Going into advent is more of a church thing (At least from my perspective, but I could be wrong) and singles out one way to celebrate Christmas.
