I'd suggest Chrono Trigger. It's an exceptional, in-depth RPG and can be purchased (or demoed/pirated) on an iDevice via App Store.

I tried the iPhone version and I can't recommend it, really bad. Go for the SNES version if possible imo.
I think he wants oldschool American RPGs, so I can't really recommend anything.
