New Level Editor?

I remember Unixmad mentioned we were receiving new developer tools in June or July...

Does anybody know anything about this?

callimuc 09-24-2011 03:56 AM

Nope. We can be happy if he posts 1 thing in a while....

GS2 support

*facepalm

I just gave up on any hope of that happening. Half the functionality of gs2 realies on client to server communication though, still it would neat for totally clientside based scripting.

True but I think he means that it would check if GS2 scripts would "work". So the test thing would be supporting GS2 not the scripts working offline. That could be working. Itīs nice when you are trial but want to script and donīt want to buy gold.

I stopped leveling a while ago but I agree a new editor would be nice. Of course gscript2 support would be ideal but it would be great to add some simplicity to things such as the finicky tile-set support. :-3

I donīt see any problems with that. Sure a gui would be nicer but itīs fine how it is.

Vinnie 09-24-2011 08:36 PM

true that if you do it correctly it works fine but isn't an offline supposed to be well... offline? If you where a new lat and didn't know how to do it there's no way of figuring it out unless you go online and check the bible.

callimuc 09-24-2011 08:50 PM

The offline editor is just supposed to make levels offline. If you actually have currently no internet, you can also check the commands list on the right side of the script window.

Theres no need for a new level editor though...

First of all, as Mattkan said, GScript2 would be an ideal ad on but you are also forgetting about Layers for tilesets.

Jea images with an edited alpha could get added to work.

Theres no need for a new level editor though... It is satisfactory,

No it's not, it's 10 years out of date.

if your not happy with that theres always gonstruct.

Gonstruct stopped getting updates.

If your not happy with that your being too fussy.

Ya, we're totally fussy because we're pissed off that they want us to make everything for them with 10 year-old development tools. Tools that could have easily been updated but they simply refuse to.

What new features would a new level editor include anyway o_0 I can't think of anything.

Layers for one. Also, don't say "but gonstruct supports it" or "make an online editor!" because many people aren't aware. Not only does it not support layers, but it deletes any layer data > 0. This means it's very easy for someone unaware(or simply forgetting) to open it up via the default editor and erase a ton of data. Also, it doesn't support any of the modern additions of image support that Graal itself has, meaning to actually use images you gotta go bend over backwards just to use them in the editor.

Also, the new editor is not really a new editor for Graal. It's web-based, and it's used for the new level format that's been hinted at many times... which isn't .NW or any variant. It's from one of their other games.

I kinda of agree with the points your making here but... your countering for peoples stupidity, the developer tools (gonstruct being included) provide a satisfactory base to make levels. Just because its 10 years out dated doesn't mean it still can't make a level. A new level editor is more a want rather then a need in my opinion. There is a need for gs2 support which makes it a need but all that should just be done online, it's a level editor after all...but you could always just write your script offline as I do and test it online when you upload it. Rc picks up on the syntax errors i'm sure.

Except you're ignoring all my points. It's a crippled editor. Just because it can produce a level doesn't mean it is providing developers with what they should have. Ya, maybe they can produce levels... but they have to work around the problems I mentioned above, and end up with simplified output(no layers).

Also, what does stupidity have to do with it?

I hate using the current editor. So many things could improve it, and so many things need to be implemented into it just to keep up with current 'graal' technology.

I was referring to people opening up a level in the default level editor after making it in gonstruct and losing all there layer data. However that's more a lack of knowledge rather then stupidity... Your points are all valid so i'll just agree with you although I have one last point... We are managing to get by with it at the moment therefore its a want not a need.

That's not stupidity, it's being unaware. Ya, there are methods you can try to go about to avoid it but you're putting a lot of data into the hands of other staff. Important data.

It is a need. We're getting by, sure... like people stranded get by by drinking their own piss. What the **** else are we getting in the last 10 years? Nothing. To act like people asking for a new level editor is acting spoiled is stupid.
