Just for fun :D

Got bored, so I decided to make somethin'. Idk why I picked this, it just came out I guess, lol. Anyways I would love some constructive criticism. I know some of the shadings are top-bottom vs left-right, but oh well. Didn't put much detail into the leaves because I really don't know how to detail leaves. Would really love some help with that :D Also, if you have a different way of making the specks on the strawberry instead of small squares, that would be appreciated :D Any other opinions are welcome also. Thanks. Definitely not a finished product though. Almost.

Cool man:\ on the other hand, how come you forgot who I was ? I was in P2P with you

They should add this

Maikeru 05-06-2012 05:51 AM

Well for a starter, its actually pretty good so props there :D
Im not a professional spriter myself but i would like to take the time to give proper criticism and show you proper spriting from my perspective please

1 - Too much colors
Counting and Scanning every pixel of your sprite, i found a total of 9 green colors and 7 red colors on your Strawberry crown. The problem was not the amount of colors used but the difference of Lum/Light between the colors (The difference was about 1-20 per color). Don't use too much colors. If you do, the difference in light between the colors shouldn't be low. Heres a color example of proper lighting:

http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/3701/paintcolors.jpg
(This is the lighting in a painting program)

116 (My basic color)
86 (-30. The second color)
46 (-40. The third color)
16 (-30. The outline)

2 - Shading perspective (Im not gonna touch alot upon this since you know)
Each view should have a proper shading. The front view of the Strawberry crown's reflection came from the side rather than the front.

3 - Symmetry for the Front view
The base/bottom part should be equal in size for the front view. Same for the back (not the leaves)

4 - Detail
For the Leaves, they felt a bit roundish. You should've spiked them up a bit

5 - Improvement
I took the time to edit/improve your Crown Strawberry
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/254/crownpy.png
Reduced all the amount of colors to 4 each. Added the strawberry seeds (it was only one yellow dot but it could've been improved much more xD)

I edited the detail to the leaves and fixed the sides/bottom of the strawberry base. I then re-shaded the entire sprite

If you don't like it, i totally understand. However, if you wish to use it for study of spriting hats or for your full strawberry crown: By all means, feel free to. I do not wish to take credit for it but its appreciated if you could give me partial credit if you ever use this.

Im not here to showoff any of my spriting skills. I just want to help others accel in spriting (even though im not the best spriter around). I hope this helped you Rok

Oh yes, that helped a ton. I knew there was a lot missing from it, but I didn't really know what. And now I do, so thanks for that :D Ya, I had no idea what to do with the seeds or the leaves. And I'd be happy to use less colors, seems easier, lol. :) Thanks for all the help. I wasn't trying to make the lineart perfect though. I figured if I made it more jagged it would look more realistic? Since strawberries aren't really shaped perfectly irl.

I loved what you did with the leaves so I kept them how they are. I'm still deciding which way I want my light coming from. I darkened the seeds because yours seemed a bit too bright for me, like they really really stood out from the strawberry. Also, with the base of the crown, I was trying to go for that "smashed onto head" look. I know I didn't achieve it very well, so if anyone has tips, they'd be much appreciated :D

If you want, i could do the side view leaves like the front view if you'd like me to

Beautiful Smoke 05-07-2012 02:03 PM

i love it ! yes like maikeru said add seeds to make it more realistics however for me the colors are a tid bit too bright i would like to see it a bit darker , like the leaf's way too bright try a darker green instead , a real strawberry has a yellow part at the bottom i would add about a yellow line at the bottoms or sides http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...awberry444.jpg

Daphne 05-07-2012 02:10 PM

It is awesome !!!! Congratulations :D

Huh? Yellow on the leaves? Or the berry? I'm confused a bit at what you're trying to say. But ya, I think the leaves could be a bit darker too. I'l see what I can do later :)

Thanks for all the help guys, but I'm still looking for a little bit of help perfecting that "smashed" look. So it looks like the bottom of the berry got smashed onto the head, but not overly smashed. Lol.
