Pokémon Uranium

9 years in development and it's out for PC: http://www.pokemonuranium.com/

I don't have the time to play right now, but I'm definitely going to check it out when I do. I know there are some Pokémon fans here so just thought I'd drop a link.

Trailer:

You better do that quick before you know what happens.

Pretty sure they won't take it down considering theres a ton of fan games out there that may even be more popular than the actual games themselves.

some of the games are even using completely legal means to run their games, requireing rom files to play the game

5hift 08-13-2016 05:01 PM

Well... ROMs aren't exactly legal so I dunno about that.

Nintendo does sometimes shut down or limit the distribution of ROMs like they did with CoolROMs.

Eh, I would hope a fan game would be a little more experimental, given how scared Gamefreak is to do anything different. Still wishing HM's weren't a thing and instead were items or if they remain HM's, simply having them allows any pokemon able to use them to do so without needing to "learn" it. Also wishing pokemon moves were instead learned and moved to a pool that you can swap your current active 4 moves with.

Point is the people who make those games use the ROMs as a way to "load" graphics and such therefor bypassing all the copyright issues. They don't distribute the ROMs, so you have to find them yourself pushing the liabilities on the users instead of them.

Pokemon Zeta and Omnicron has HM items which I think is pretty handy.

Also hope the game difficulty is much harder compared to the main games which are stupid easy.

Pokemon Reborn and Rejuvenation are crazy considering the people who made the game have the AI take advantage of super OP ability combos and field effects such as Cinccino w/ Skill Link and Kings Rock (Kill me).

They also try and force players to use different Pokemon that aren't totally OU which really makes you appreciate the other UU Pokemon out there.

I think I really prefer RPGMaker Pokemon games over ROM hacks considering they really include a hell lot more resources to add totally new things to a Pokemon game.

Most ROM hacks I know of don't require the player to go out and find ROMs.

Liquid Crystal requires you to find an unpatched version of the FireRed ROM and use it to set up the hack using a patching tool included in the download.

I also think as long as these games don't try and profit off the Pokemon name brand they should be fine.

Fan games aren't meant to generate revenue but provide something different for die-hard fans.

That's because they're not ROM hacks. ROMs contain information that's used in the game, including assets like graphics, music and so on. So what they do is make an entirely independent game, with their own code... but instead of going through the risk of hosting/uploading/packaging the copyrighted graphics, they make you provide the ROM and simply load the data from that instead.

Elk 08-13-2016 11:44 PM

a ROM isnt illegal in the first place, its the entire data from the little editions ported onto a PC and then played with an emulator

Pretty sure all the ROM hacks I've downloaded never asked to me to go out and get the base ROM except for Liquid Crystal.

You can just patch the ROM then distribute it as the full game which I'm assuming is what happened with the other ROM hacks I've gotten.

Also looks like Nintendo America harassed the devs into taking down the download links.

RIP.

At least there's probably a metric **** ton of unoffical downloads out there.

imSupah 08-14-2016 02:34 AM

Luckily people uploaded the download to sites like MediaFire and through torrents. Just have to be careful now since these downloads are unofficial and some might not even be the game. With that said, I'm gonna try it since I haven't played Pokemon since White came out.
