Are Weaboos the New Geeks/Nerds?
When I was growing up, being a nerd/geek was something that was kind of frowned upon. Playing videogames, being good with technology, etc was something that would get you bullied in school.
Nowadays, being a nerd/geek is almost seen as cool. People wear hipster glasses without actual lenses just for their appearance. Designer stores make shirts that say "nerd". Teens used to steer away from technology, now they can't go 5 minutes without using the internet/social media. Some of the most popular musicians of our time are nerds themselves. Electronic music has moved on to become a mainstream music genre, which is generally created by nerds/geeks that can actually understand complex music composition software and audio equipment. Gaming is becoming more and more mainstream. 10 years ago if you were a gamer, you would be told to get a life, go out and party, etc. Now if you're a gamer, it's generally accepted unless you game all day and never leave the house. Nerd culture is not only de-stigmatized, but its essentially being glorified in modern days. I've noticed something. Being a weaboo carries a similar image to what being a nerd/geek did 10 years ago. Those that are obsessed with anime are viewed in the same form of "loser" stereotype that geeks/nerds were 10 years ago. It's viewed as weird, antisocial, etc. TL;DR: Normies started gaming, now they hate on weaboos. Thoughts? |
People knew 10 years ago that geeks/nerds would 'rule the world' (I suppose it was already happening with the likes of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs etc.) but yeah, with the likes of YouTube, Twitch, and social media being born in the 21st century, being a nerd is now 'okay'. I tend to differentiate between the two now though, I have many nerdy interests and so do a lot of people I know, but idk, I keep them in moderation unlike a geek would maybe?
Maybe thats the difference between a nerd and a weaboo, a nerd may have many interests and nowadays anyone who possesses a range of interesting albeit nerdy or not makes you cool. A weeaboo likely has 2 - 3 interests max, one of them obviously being anime, the other 2 maybe learning Japanese and gaming. Unlike nerds/geeks, weaboos will not rule the world unlike nerds/geeks, they probably lack the passion to. Oh and lets not forget the glorification of cringe!! |
What happend to the emo?

I think you're a nerd based on how you behave. No one really thinks it's cool to wear a shirt that says 'nerd'. I think nerd has been grouped with geek, dork, etc. and is now defined now by how you behave in social situations. I don't like the word 'weaboo' because 1. it sounds too insulting, and 2. it sounds like something a nerd would say. I call them anime nerds. I don't generally like anime nerds, but I do like Livid. <3 The fact is that most people who are very smart or play video games all the time usually have different interests than most "normal" (I hate that word "normal" but used it for my point) people. They're also usually somewhat anti-social, which is really what causes them to be labeled as a nerd/geek.

I think you mean otakus as such (The western meaning ie Watches and loves anime yet still functions in society; not the japanese meaning for weeaboo or whatnot).

Acting like a nerd/geek might be considered cool. I don't think nerds even exist anymore. Like the legit ones. Weaboos are just a whole new level of [Quote this and insert a word]

I think of weabos to be less intelligent nerds.
I always thought nerds were people who were and acted smarter than everybody. |

Is nerd even still use as an insult anymore? Whenever I hear it, it's always being used in a joking manner.

I'd broaden the category from just weebs to neckbeards in general, I know a lot of real normal people who watch anime and no one thinks nothin bout it; the whole neckbeard aspect is when people start to judge you. And really it has the same general characteristics nerds used to:
