Singles spar tournament

Why doesn't this exist? Is there solid reasoning behind why it doesn't exist?

Aguzo 11-13-2015 08:36 AM

1. You need a system that can actually rank the good players from the bad ones.

2. A lag cap, first and foremost. No laggers/delayers allowed to keep it fair.

3. Hats, trophy, levels.

4. Staff that can summon correctly.

5. A server that can handle the lagfest. Would be nice if only the players that are participating can connect to the server, meanwhile everyone else can watch the event on twitch or some other livestreaming site.

Mostly just 1 and 2.

David 11-13-2015 08:49 AM

1. Top 64 on the current leaderboard.

2. I don't think you should exclude anyone from playing based on their location. But just like in the GST if it's excessive you get DQed.

3. All relatively easy things to accomplish. Making an extra spar arena level could take like.... 30 seconds. Trophy is the same, just copy the GST trophies, make it 1, put it in the main lobby and why shouldn't the gfx team be capable of whipping up 3 extra hats for an event? Doesn't seem like a big issue to me.

4. Idek if that's even a real problem. I've gotten summoned into the GST room every single time just fine and it seems like that hasn't been a big issue over time, why should it be now? I think I remember one incident where someone wasn't summoned with their team and the host fixed it right away.

5. It would be just as laggy as GST. I don't see how there would be any difference. Every GST I've been in has never been "out of this world holy **** what is happening" laggy.

Would you make an iDevice and Mixed tournement? Would some iDevs be allowed to enter Mixed? If you select top 64 for Mixed, how would the iDevs qualify?

Could be same as GST, top 32 (64 would prob be better though in this case because it's single players, not teams) from Mixed and top 64 from iDevice.

i think the solo leaderboard should be fixed to reflect the best and not the most active

when a scrub like me can log on and comfortably keep up or beat the top 20 you know something is wrong

We have some ideas for a tournament system of sorts, no guarantee though when they might come to fruition though.

There's nothing stopping you from organizing and hosting your own tournaments.

this. the current leaderboard sucks and in no way represents who is better than who. allowing people to participate based on their rankings on this leaderboard would exclude good players who don't care to spar often and include bad players who play a lot.

i think going by leaderboard is a must, but not when the leaderboard is flawed

Zetectic 11-13-2015 05:43 PM

there are over 500 people wanting to participate.
now classic wants to be fair to all the players. so they won't chop out 436 people.

fp4 and I recently discussed an integrated system for people to host their own [round robin style] spar leagues. It goes in rounds and at the end of each round a visual league table is generated based on points: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. Everyone spars everyone in their own time and at the end of each league the person with the most points wins. Gralats required for entry to put into a winners pot, but also to hold people accountable for dropping out when they're losing.

This was aimed towards having sparring activity spread out throughout a season, and the ability to host your own would enable smaller groups to participate away from the 'better' people. I don't know if it would be open to everyone being able to saturate the system by starting their own league, or restricted to a few proactive individuals in the community who are interested in hosting. Perhaps an 'official' league can be hosted whilst non-participants of this are able to host their own. I don't know, it was just something that came up a few days ago.

But yes, the reason why a singles spar tournament hasn't been done before is because of numbers.

Sounds like a great idea if you could make it work. Maybe it could have the options to choose from 1v1 to 5v5 leagues? Only downside to that I see is that the higher you go the harder it is to schedule matches, I think at least 2v2 would work fine though.

Aguzo 11-13-2015 07:43 PM

Doesn't have to be a command @ruffnut, it can be in the menus.

Win enough rank up. Lose enough de-rank.
Beat a league higher than you gain more points.
Lose to a league lower than you, lose a lot of points.

I personally like this type of system, and it works great for matchmaking.

I'm tired of these desperate grown men whining about more ego boosting activities. Fp4, how much will you charge me to host a tournament for these nubs. 64 man tournament and we can use aguzos legendary list to pick the participants :D
