New terrain generation. Again.

From the minecraft forum front page:

Are you a fan of how terrain used to be generated, with massive mountain ranges, hills and more height variety? Jeb is hard at work on land generation, with the intent of having land generation be more varied in a future release. Not as much a fan of massive, hilly landscapes - or would you at least like an option for flat plains, for easier building? Not to worry, he is working on adding that as an option as well, which you can use at will. Whether you're a fan of rolling mountains or rolling plains, the power to exercise some control over land generation is not far off.
Get ready for a re boot of the server, guys. Again. :P

This is ****ing outragious. Jesus ****ing Christ they need to stop with this ****. They hid behind the Alpha and Beta title before with this under "it's not final so don't get attached to saved data." Now however they're selling it as a full game, this **** is not acceptable. We should feel secure in our saved data when we buy a game advertised as a full game... but oh ya it's not a full game it's just being sold at the price of a new game because **** the loyal supporters of Minecraft.

Woooooooosah.

Anyways, it sounds like he's providing options for terrain, so maybe we will be able to pick the 1.0 generation, meaning no need to lose data. I'm hoping.

If we're resetting this s*** we're keeping our stuff in chests this time. Kondie and I have around 10 stacks of slimeballs and about two stacks of diamonds. Don't even get me started on our ores and rare potion ingredients.

... I'm not going to ****ing update if that's all there is. Keep the server un updated. People can either not upgrade or downgrade if they want to play. Not resetting everything because of a update that only does this, not like it would e usefull. Everyone would fight over what the terrain was set as.

I know I saw it earlier and I didn't even process what this would mean until you posted this thread.

Like I said, hopefully he allows the current generation of worldgen to be an option. Meaning, since he's allowing us to pick various generators, we can choose this one for the server and we won't have to change over. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible unless he's getting deep into the generator code in a way that can't be passed through options.

Yeah, i'm getting sick of this crap. Also, since this is now a "full game" would we have to pay for this? Or isn't this update big enough to be an expansion?

Somewhat good news. According to Jeb, differences between the generator should be minor enough that you shouldn't encounter too many differences between old chunks and new. Hopefully. If you want to make sure the world looks as appealing as possible though, you all might want to go out and explore and generate as many chunks as possible.

On the other hand, if anyone has a 1.0 single-player world that's fairly well explored, you can try out the new snapshot and explore new areas and let us all know how the transition fairs.

However, even though he said he only changed the variation, he also changed the range of heights in biomes. I feel that you might see a lot of "walls" of blocks on newly generated chunks because of the differences in height.
