Is Tor Safe To Download?

So after hearing of all the bull**** the US Government is doing to spy on people's internet activities, I'm considering using Tor. I'm just wondering, is there any chance it might be filled with adware/malware of some sort? I'm just wondering if anyone uses it, too. Is it hard to use? Does it lag bad when used?

Its fine. Just be aware that you'll never really be safe from the feds.

I don't have anything to hide as I don't do anything illegal, I just don't appreciate them looking at everything I do online as I consider it a violation of my 4th amendment rights.

If you have nothing to hide, don't hide it.

By the way, Tor is safe. My friend used it on the school computers to get minecraft and bypass their detection.

Well, I'm going away to college next year and I have no idea how strict they are there. I don't want them looking into everything I'm doing there. It's not so much about hiding from the government or the law, but rather just not getting spied on by the IT dept. when using the public campus network.

If I use Tor, all they would really be able to see I'm doing is that I use Tor.

It's more the fact that historically the government doesn't necessarily deserve our trust in this kind of thing.

Also to add, the government often uses this data for politcal attacks. For example, if 10 years from now I decided to run to be a representative or something, all it takes is them finding something I did or said on the internet 8 years ago that can be spun and used against me.

What you want is a VPN, trying to do anything over Tor would be completely unbearable.

Yeah I was thinking of a VPN, but I'm not sure if I can find one that is both cheap and fast enough. My friend has one he pays for and he says he has a lot of issues when using it, so I feel like it would have the same symptoms as Tor.

I also hear that with a vpn some information can also be leaked through, so are they really reliable enough?

Don't trust free proxies/VPNs.

You are thinking way to much about their spying. Just do what you do, I don't think their IT department can even track you if you don't even have to sign up with a username and password

hosler 12-27-2013 03:19 PM

Last I heard tor uses outdated sha encryption

iDylan 12-27-2013 04:45 PM

use GetPrivate. Easiest and safest one i've found so far.
