First week braces help?
I recently got braces. They hurt. A lot. :(
I had no idea I was getting them (long story) so I couldn't really prepare; and I need help. I don't know what I can eat without feeling like one of my teeth are going to break off and the front of my mouth feels like it's being ripped to shreds by the pokey-bits. Help! What can I eat and what should I do to stop the pain? |
the pain will start to calm soon, you need to get used to them
1Cut your food thoroughly. You want to take food in the smallest pieces possible. For foods that might be more difficult to cut like bagels, tearing them into small pieces also work. 2Eat softer foods. In the first couple of days, stick to liquid-based foods like yogurts, pudding and soups. Mashed potatoes are a good option as well. You can also cook fruits and vegetables to make them softer. 3Alter your meat intake. Steaks and ribs may not be an option, but that doesn't mean you have to stop eating meat. Switch to cold cuts or seafood. 4Avoid sugars and starches. Bacteria feeds on sugar and starch, creating plaque. If plaque builds up around your braces, it can get under your braces and eat off the calcium on your teeth. This creates permanent, white bruises on your teeth. Foods like ice cream, candy, chocolate, soft drinks and other foods high in sugar are not good. Refrain from chewing gum (especially bubble gum). 5Be gentle with your teeth. If you just had a good long workout, how would you feel? Tired, sore, and achy. Well, that's how your teeth probably feel right now! Stay away from chewy and sticky foods that will irritate your teeth. Pain Prevention Even if you alter your diet and take extra precaution, your mouth may still be sore and irritable. Here are some methods to try and reduce potential outbursts of pain. 1Eat slowly and carefully. If it hurts to chew something, don't! It will only make your mouth hurt worse. Try mashing the food by pressing it against the roof of your mouth with your tongue. If chewing is needed, use your back teeth. Try eating foods like soup that require minimal chewing. 2Take a pain reliever. Sometimes water helps to lessen the bad taste of them! If you don't have a pain reliever, try sucking on ice. Don't chew on the ice. You could also put frozen peas in a bag and apply pressure with it onto your teeth as best as you can. 3Use wax. You can also purchase wax to put on the metal part that irritates your mouth. The wax is sold at almost any pharmacy. 4Do a salt rinse. You should regularly rinse your mouth with table salt and warm water to help prevent painful infections. 5Prevent your top and bottom teeth from touching each other. Tips Taking a pain pill before bed will make it easier to sleep, as braces usually hurt most when you are lying down or on your side. Braces are not flaws! They pay off in the long run for a gorgeous smile and can be considered an accessory to match with your look. They can be assets that complement your face. Wear lip salve when you go for checkups and braces tightening. It will prevent you from getting crinkly lips afterwards. Do not eat sticky or hard foods and make sure to brush, floss, rinse with mouth wash, and rinse with salt water every night. Rinsing with salt water will help ease pain and irritation in your mouth. Don't keep on eating something if it starts hurting. Don't eat the foods that orthodontist told you to avoid. They know what they're doing and what's good for braces. This way you will avoid breaks and won't need to have your braces on for longer. If it hurts, don't irritate it even more; if you touch it it will probably make the pain worse! If you can't brush your teeth after meals, at least rinse your mouth. Use a straw to drink coffee, soft drinks, or drinks that could damage or stain your teeth. Bring a tiny pocket mirror to school or a little toothbrush for after lunch. Warnings Don't fiddle with your braces. Sometimes it costs more money to fix braces and though they may appear strong, the wires are very flimsy and are easily bent or broken. Your braces are precise appliances, but can be damaged by hard foods such as hard taco/tostada shells, apples, and bagels, as well as sticky foods. These can loosen or even dislodge braces completely. Avoid chewing non-food items that can bend the arch-wire and cause discomfort. Brush over your braces and under, even on top. Don't eat foods that are sticky, like caramel, peanut butter, honey, etc. These substances will get stuck in your braces and could pull the brackets off your teeth. EditThings You'll Need Braces A good orthodontist-recommended toothbrush A non-whitening toothpaste (if you use whitening, you'll have discoloration) A cleaner (water pick) Floss and floss-threaders Mouthwash Fluoride rinse or gel Pain relievers (Advil, Panadol and Ibuprofen are best) Soft foods Wax (sold at any pharmacy) Go betweens (they will probably give some to you) Flossers with picks on end i hope they help. |

I had braces since 2011. I don't know when they will be removed. First week was pretty hard, but most orthodontists supply you with a supply case that helps your mouth feel better. :D Hope your mouth feels better soon. :shy:
