Metro/Train system

Hi guys,

I had an idea, there will be cities around GraalCraft. We should connect hem with train system (minecart) above the ground en metro system underground!
This is also a good way to trasport items to shop and stuff like that. maybe an idea?

Vanilla minecart systems are inefficient over long distances:
- Cart collisions with mobs
- Cart collisions with players
- Cart collisions with items
- Cart collisions with other carts
- Cart collisions with lagging / slower / parked players in carts
- No manner of storing the carts without lagging the balls out of the server (I am aware of several designs and have tried them myself)
- Decached chunks on the server stopping unattended minecarts.

A G2K1 train it is not. :[

Not to mention the fact that youd need to make it going both ways. Making tunnels and running down them is easier and almost as quick.

What happened to that mod that deposited carts into chests when they collided? I want that!

The redstone system to get this to work would be laggy. Unless resources where provided by ops I doubt we could make a underground railroad network.

Redstone doesn't lag unless it's doing complex circuitry. A simply redstone under a track, or redstone to switch a track direction isn't hurting anything.

Wouldn't it being extended to all these chunks cause lag? Especially if we made a way to change direction.

Redstone circuitry to change track direction is not a lag issue. The redstone gets activated or deactivated, and then it is done. It's not necessary to extend the redstone a very long way, if the circuitry is done properly.

I would much rather have this metro system in place rather than the /warp system, along with removing /home. That would create a real survival experience. However, I know people like having their home warps. :)

The metro thing would be really cool, though.

i vote for an above ground one, rather than underground. People could unknowingly dig into a rail tunnel and disrupt a railway. this is totally feasible.

If a Metro system is to be embarked upon, you may as well just hold off until 1.9. I personally don't like the warping system, but I find Runecraft more practical and yet it fits in with the game. In order to teleport you have to create a waypoint(where you teleport to) and a teleporter.

Minetracks sound cool, but they can be a pain in the ass, especially over very long distances.

I'd rather have runecraft over /tp, but runecraft + metro could be cool.

That would stop the lagging storage :O
Would help unattended carts not lose as much momentum, but the other issues still exist :| lol

It'd be nice if there was a mod that removed unattended carts after a few minutes.

Theres a bukkit plugin to remove minecarts with a command.

I wonder if minecarts say when they were placed...then you could just run a timer, and check when they were placed, then remove them. :P

Haro 10-20-2011 05:26 AM

i cheked out runecraft... gotta say I'm not really feeling it. Alot of runes are quite costly.

But I also agree with u dusty that the warp system isnt really cool. I mean, if your quick enough, you can type /home before you hit the ground during a long fall.

I'd rather have trains then warps, but running it over oceans would be messy/cage in boat travel. I think we'd have to run it underground there, besides not many people mine under the ocean.
