Beats by Dr. Dre

What is your honest opinion on these?
I'm not thinking of buying one - never will - but I'm interested in what the Graalians population has to say.

David K? 06-19-2012 10:33 PM

I heard by my Universities janitor after commenting on my SkullCandy headphones that they were very good in the audio section, and would probably make you go deaf.

I can understand that since most people listen to music loud, and the vibrations of the bass in the speakers. I guess he thought my Aviators were Beats at first.. but I've honestly never seen the set.

Wester 06-19-2012 10:34 PM

I was going to buy a pair as they are pretty popular in my home country. But when I asked people on facebook they really didn't agree.

A music producer on my school (makes dubstep/techno), introduced me to Pioneer, he told me those would be alot better as Dr. Dre beats have too much bas in them. Of course Pioneer would have been better as I listen to dubstep, techno, electrica and such. Don't know what kind of music you like..

Do you live in Germany? I don't, but I'm wondering if you do.
And it seems you have good friends. Do not buy Beats if you ever feel like splurging on headphones, they just do not cut it for the price point. Pioneer is a good brand for quality, portable DJ headphones among other brands.

If anyone actually likes these, please say why. I'm curious.

Ace 06-19-2012 11:38 PM

bass is good. That is all

Talon 06-19-2012 11:48 PM

Not even, the bass is just overpowering and too punchy. Not to mention it doesn't extend past sub-bass at around 90Hz and has no texture or control. Also veils up the midrange quite a bit.

No, I don't live in Germany, and I don't really want to share my home country either, if you see this post as I'm mad because you asked, I'm not . I do have good friends, I only choose the best ones .

I've had, and still have SkullCandys that look better than Beats. I would advise to not get SkullCandy however. I'm trapped in their lifetime warranty loop. :/

Kiko 06-20-2012 12:02 PM

I have beats. They're complete rip offs.
400$ wasted.
There are headphones called Senhiesers which are top quality and very comfortable, and they're 80$
DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF BUYING BEATS!

XENA* 06-20-2012 12:07 PM

I'll say Beats are good but they aren't worse the price.

HappyCat123 06-20-2012 03:15 PM

I have $30 headphones that sound better to me than my friends $400 beats.

Beats are so overrated. I have $20 Sony headphones that are comfier and a lot better. It's just like iPods, everyone has to get them just to hate them.

David K? 06-20-2012 09:41 PM

I think someone should compile a list of headphones they think are the best. I only spend 180 for mine and if I could have gotten better for 80, I would have. When I feel my shipping and handling prices (of them being sent in) has reached half the price I paid for my headphones, I'll, hopefully, stop sending them in.

Headphones cost maybe 30c to 5$ to make right?
It may seem that they are losing money, but I highly doubt it.

Talon 06-21-2012 12:07 AM

I'll compile said list by budget...

$1-70:
VSonic GR06 (IEM)
Audio-Technica ATH-CKM50
Klipsch i4
Grado SR60i

$70-150
Audio-Technica ATH-M50
Ultrasone HFI-780
Sennheiser HD555
Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10

Also I might think of starting up a thread to help people with headphone choice... thoughts?

I think a thread would be nice if you organize it by quality, while giving price, and information others might look for.. ie. bass, or ghz or whatever..

I know I'd find it useful.
The only real brand that I have ever known of, besides cheap crap in stores, are SkullCandy and I have heard of Beats.

I agree, whereas it seems they are slightly getting better, their costs have gone up greatly, and they have gone from lifetime warranty dollars, to points (1900 points were $19.00), to points that go away after 2-3 months. Basically not allowing you to save them.

I have paid for Skullcandy headphone from E-Bay which I received not working...
Emailed the seller and they sent a stupid letter back saying I could send them in.
(That is shipping money wasted on my part to send in their defect.)
I then emailed SkullCandy who sent me a free pair and a smaller cheap buds pair too.
(I then sent in the defect for the extra points since they did not tell me what I could or could not do with them.)

I've had many where parts would just go bad.. my last pair:
Aviator Blacks - Broke in about three months, the mic stopped working. Sometimes I couldn't hear through the headphones because of it too. Then they dropped and the wire came out of the mic. o.O

I've had maybe 7 other pairs of Skullcandy that I constantly returned for others...
(Which is why I say I'm stuck in their loop.)

I now have:
Hesh 2 Carbon W/Mic
Heavy Medal Black W/Mic
And another discontinued pair from them somewhere W/Mic.

I do like their looks and keeping their bags though..
The sound quality is... good? I guess.
Can't say I really look for sound quality or can I really tell the difference..

I give them less than 6 months.

(Yes, I've actually justified why I find them horrible, and not just saying they are without reasoning)

I'll start a thread not for listing by budget as I've posted already, but for personal recommendations based on the poster's personal preferences if you guys want.

Some people might want the next best thing if they are on a budget though.. I mean, it doesn't have to be organized by price, but by quality.. Price can just be listed, unless they can go on eBay and find it cheaper.. which I would try for.

Talon 06-21-2012 07:24 AM

I don't really think compiling a list would work too well for some people, due to subjective audio and sound signature preferences. I would definitely add something like the RE0 to the list and just have people disapppinted by the pack of bass. The thread I posted is in the same section.

Skyzer 06-21-2012 08:08 PM

holy **** I'm a ******

Engel 06-21-2012 08:12 PM

Okay; listen up. The thing about those beats is this; they fked up the bass and made it sound like there is ALOT more bass, while the middle and higher sounds are normal. If you like that they're okay, but still overpriced. The one thing I like about them is that they isolate the sound so it doesn't disturb others. Long story short; don't buy them. If you get them or can get them for a very low price (50-60 dollars) you should do it though ;).
Just some advice ^^.

Why? I don't see any other brands advertising their headphones.
One might say the same about PC vs Mac back in the day...
Bill Gates decided to advertise.

I still only know about Beats and Skullcandy, as well as random sony crap...
Which is why I feel that the list might be a good idea for others. Some people aren't born with a list of headphone companies in their mind...

I know Apple sells some, but they don't look all that great.. Or comfortable for that matter...

Also, I found the other link... this thread has more info.. x.X; Actually the other one doesn't have anything... what happen to the list. @.@;;

lol I thought you were making a reference "Like a boss" at first... yeah, I've slightly heard of the name Bose.. once or twice.. If I was asked, I wouldn't know what they were though..

This is why I would think a thread like this would be good with a slightly organized list of headphones...

Seeker99 06-22-2012 04:55 AM

We have a Bose home theatre system. It's a really cheap one but nice. The Bose headphones are really nice. I want to buy the $900 Bose and Yahama AV receiver sound system for my computer one day.

Talon 06-22-2012 07:09 AM

If you can get them for 60 dollars, get them.

Then sell them online for $200 and get some good headphones. Because in all honesty, there are headphones under $50 that sound as good, if not better than any headphone in the Beats line. Here's accurate pricing for the Beats, in my opinion.

Beats Solo/Mixr: $20
Beats Tour IEMs: $25
Beats 'Studio' 'HD' 'High-fidelity': $50 (being generous here)
Beats Pro: $170 - Because these are decent, but any headphone at the $450 price point blows them out of the water.

And for Skullcandy's house sound, the highs are extremely aggressive and tinny, mids are almost non-existant, and the lows are a far cry from any IEM at the price range (Ink'd might be an exception, maybe). In short, Skullcandy's ear-piercing treble makes my ears bleed, then the Beats sound like the cotton balls I just put in my ears to stop the bleeding from the Skullcandies.

Bas! 06-22-2012 09:28 AM

To the top.

And I'll have to disagree with any statement made defending Bose. They have great noise-cancelling headphones, but everything else (for their price) is subpar compared to other audio companies. Same goes for Skullcandy. Skullcandy's house sound seems really repetitive in all of their products. My old $60 FMJs sounded just like my friend's $20 Ink'd. I guess they aren't horrible headphones... but any $60 Sennheiser will destroy any $60 Skullcandy. The Beats problem really extends to Skullcandy and Bose just as hard.

Actually, the Monoprice 8320 is reputed to be a very, VERY good earphone for the price. A well-known Head-Fier estimates their sound quality to be in the $60-70 tier. Good job Dusty.

So yes, I think I would rate them above Skullcandy. How are they Dusty?

Dusty 06-28-2012 09:54 PM

I'm not someone who cares that much about sound. I always buy cheap headphones, though they're better than what I usually get. I haven't bothered to properly seal out the outside sound like advised though(by filling the ear-bits with foam from earplugs or something).

Kiwi 06-28-2012 09:57 PM

In New Zealand, big headphones aren't big. We have them, but yeah. We just use the ones that come with our iPods/MP3s until they break, then buy new ones. We don't base our popularity on having things that look like rocks on the side of our face. :D

Talon 06-28-2012 11:10 PM

I never wear my full-sized M50s outside of the house anymore. I mainly use IEMs (in-ear monitors) when I'm outside to draw less attention. I hate anyone that goes outside with full-sized headphones.

I find it amusing being asked if I am a DJ. I've had two people ask if I'd DJ for a party but to their surprise I had to turn them down. :/ The best I've ever done was mix a few songs here and there, but they could have been much better.

And $10 isn't too bad, I'm just wondering if they are better, and then I can say that they are. And I was thinking I might as well do it before my Skull Candys break. (Even if I got two of the pairs only two-three weeks ago)

For the Monoprice 8320's? Easily better than most/if not all IEMs in the Skullcandy line. Here's a thread from Head-Fi.

Quote:

Posted by Dsnuts (From Head-Fi)
Welcome one and all to yet another discovery in Headfi land that definitely warrant a thread. For those that know me around these parts, I am not one to be afraid to tell what is up with a product that is so astonishing I had to bring it to the attention of those that are willing to throw out any notion of common sense..

Yes it makes no sense as these are so under the radar. So not discovered. I mean who buys a $7.11 IEM if your a serious listener right? I frequently mention to guys that want a great sounding cheaper IEM on the threads about these and most that have any semblance of common sense will just skip my colorful suggestion and go about recommending the usual suspects for in ears.

Now I will clearly tell it. I am a complete NOOB when it comes to IEMs so knowing this, it is up to you all to see if I am right or wrong about what I am about the show the community..

The monoprice 8320..To put it simply I am shocked at what level of sound these produce for the price of a bag o chips n dip.

So why would any audiophile veteran take this thread or this product seriously? It is because to my ears on sound quality alone I have not heard anything better in an IEM. I am sure there are plenty of high end in ears that trump all over these. I mean they better right? But what will surprise the many that will try these is just how complete the sound is on these. More than complete these are the very definition of clean balanced dynamic and bassy IEM.

Purchased at monoprice.com. These will set you back a whopping $9 or so shipped anywhere in the US.

Specifications
Model Number MEP-933
Driver Unit 14.2 mm
Impedance 32 ohms
Sensitivity 96 +/- 3 dB / 1mW (S.P. L at 1 k Hz)
Frequency Response 20 Hz to 20 kHz
Wire Length 1225 mm (48")

These use a big 14.2 mm driver unit housed in a thick metallic coated plastic housing that is surprisingly sturdy and strong that is vented which adds to the clean sound on these. The braided cloth cord was a good design choice on part of monoprice as without it I can see these snapping faster than one would care for. By looking at the specs, it certainly does not indicate the level of sound these emit. I know there is a tendency to look for more dynamic specs that might indicate dynamic sound but that is why this thread exist. The sound.

The Sound..To say these came to me as a complete surprise.. Guys this wasn't just a surprise. This was a complete.

wtf.jpg.. I mean how can the sound from something this cheap sound stay up with the sounds of a Denon D2000 headphone but with better mids or a Ultrasone HFi-580 with better detail? How can these have a clean balanced dynamic sound? How can these have some of the best BASS I have ever heard in any headphone, both quality and quantity? How can the level of detail on these be so great symbols and high hats literally jump out from your sound spectrum and leave you thinking.. Wait a sec that high hat should not be that far from the sound stage.? But you just heard it! Little details in every recording are clearly heard on these. WTF? Right..

So without going into much detail I will challenge anyone reading this to try one.. If you end up trying one and feel this discovery wasn't warranted and I am full of poo.. Just let me know and I will clean up any extra earwax that is piling up in my ears as I must be hearing some type of magic because of it.. Magic. Just magic.. Let me know how you guys are hearing it. I am curious to know how these stack up to your existing Iem collection.. You can think I am a ****** or a joke. If I am wrong. But what if I am right.. The sound value to money ratio on these is over the top..Instead of saying to yourself. .This is all popycock! Just try one. Oh and I would get one before they sell out at monoprice. They will sell out once a few of you guys throw out the word. I have no doubts in my mind these will catch on fire.

For the guys that do get them to try out..Burn them in for a solid 24 hours.. These don't require a huge burn in to start enjoying but the 24 hours is a requirement. If you hear any type of pop or crackle that is the driver flexing so no worries. Burn away my friends!!

As far as I know I haven't heard a better sounding IEM. SO with that I start this thread. It will be up to the community to let others know how they hear these.
