Wii N64 Emulator

Okay, so long story short I want to emulate N64 games on my Wii. There's a few tutorials online but they don't seem to work--out of date perhaps? If anybody has anything to recommend I'm all ears.

First, what SD card do you have?

The Doctor 05-08-2012 03:44 AM

Second, do your parents approve of installing home brew?

Can you be more specific? Why isn't it enough in this case? N64 roms aren't that large, most are 16mb, some are 32mb and in rare cases there are 64mb roms.

MattKan 05-08-2012 06:20 PM

I'm not exactly desperate to cram several games on the SD card, just one. Why isn't 2GB enough?

The rom like Dusty stated, aren't large enough but the emulator plus the programs along with the rom is too much for 2 GB

Emulators are pretty small programs considering they don't need much in terms of resources. I have never seen an emulator larger than 10mb. Can you back this stuff up or what?

Well, here is whats needed
-Homebrew Browser
-Apps folder *Required*
-Emulator
-Plus the rom
-BIOS-If emulator doesnt have it
If he does have enough, he can only play one game

I can't imagine these taking up that much space.

I already addressed this.

Again, fairly small in the scheme of 2gb.

N64 emulation doesn't need bios, but even if it does bios for the N64 would most likely be very small considering hardware limitations of the N64.

Either way, memory is dirt cheap now. You can probably get an 8gb for under $10. But good way to test if 2gb is enough? Get all the stuff you need and put it on and see if it fits :P

N64 looks HORRIBLE. Not even like, the graphics themselves, but the fact that the N64 outputted like 240i resolution.

You're better off investing in the Virtual Consoles on the Wii if you wish you do it legit.

I actually took screenshots a while ago to show the difference, and the pictures don't do it justice. The interlacing on top of the 240 resolution just adds insult to injury:

A while ago I wanted to replay Majora's Mask. I have it on the Gamecube, which looks just like the Wii version, but it tends to crash randomly(pretty ****ing bad "minor bug" when you can't save your progress often. So I thought "well I can just play it on my N64!" So I booted it up and was ****ing appalled. I almost immediately just bought it on my Wii and had a much better experience.

MattKan 05-09-2012 02:52 AM

I want to play Banjo Kazooie again and I want to play Banjo Tooie again.

Unfortunately Microsoft bought Rare and now there's no hope that those two great games will ever be available on the virtual console.

Can get them on the 360, and honestly, Microsoft does them better. They actually PORT the games instead of just emulating. Meaning upgraded graphics, resolution, proper in-game buttons and so on.

Well that's a shame because I don't have an Xbox XD

See? I'm just making this difficult. :P

Well the games themselves probably are a large size because they need to store models textures and other game files. Obviously not as much as newer games because of low res textures and models with a low number of vertices, but still probably high.

Looks the same except it looks like the bit depth on N64 is 16 bit and the wii one is 32 bit

also the n64 seems to use level of detail(obsolete way of making far away textures lower res), and the wii seems to not. hard to tell just by the picture, might just be the lower resolution.

I already addressed this above as well. Roms for the n64 aren't that much larger, at least not large enough to fill up a 2gb card.

It's a pity I can't capture the image from my TV, but I think it's quite obvious how much more horribly the N64 one is. The textures are muddled, the farther texture looses almost all detail not even that far from the camera(because of the resolution), and the interlacing creates horribly jagged and rough outlines.

http://i.imgur.com/3Yp8m.png

The worst is the interlacing. You really just have to see it on your own TV(especially an HDTV) to really see just how bad it is to look at. CRT televisions alleviate the effect a bit because of the bleeding/blurryness that is their nature, but my gaming TV is an HDTV(and even on CRT it's still pretty damn bad).

Remorse 05-09-2012 05:31 PM

so if i were to hook up my N64 to my HD 3D led tv it'd look
****** compared to the virtual console version?

Skill 05-09-2012 06:55 PM

According to what dusty said, yes.

Like Dusty had said basically, 2GB would be enough. I have done this before. I used a Kodak 256MB SD Card and easily had enough space for everything. 256MB is 1/8 of 2GB. I'm pretty sure you don't need a 2GB SD Card. Even if you do, and don't have another SD Card, you could load it onto the SD Card, unload it onto the Wii, go back to the computer, add the rest, etc.

Actually, it took me about a year to figure it out using google/YouTube. Which sucked because I used it to hack on Medal of Honor: Heroes II which at the end of the summer I figured it out, they shut the online down... Wasted all that time... I still once and a while (very very rarely) get on Mario Kart and make people rage by using the lightning over and over on them... Oh, the fun days of being a "hacker" on the Wii...
Haven't done it for about 2 years.

Engel 05-10-2012 07:49 AM

When I played on my N64 back in the days, I thought it looked amazing :o.
Remember that this is a very old console, so I think the graphics look (for that time) pretty good. Anyways: ive never actually done anything with roms, except putting pokemon enerald on my calculator...
